Trails & Torah: Tryon Creek Natural Area

Join us for a 1.5-mile guided hike through Tryon Creek State Natural Area, co-led by Dr. Yosef Rosen, Director of Jewish Life & Learning at the Jewish Federation, and Rabbi Elihu Gevirtz, a local botanist and educator. Along the trail, we’ll pause to learn about the native plants and animals that make their home in the forest, including their names, environmental adaptations, ecological relationships, and, in some cases, medicinal uses. These encounters with the living landscape will be paired with Torah teachings about nature and the human place within the more-than-human world. Come prepared to walk, learn, observe closely, and experience the forest as both ecosystem and text.
All ages are welcome. Kids under 14 are free but must be accompanied by an adult.
The trail is easy-moderate: the ground is even, but includes an ascent & descent.
Elihu Gevirtz is a professional wildlife biologist, botanist, and a rabbi. He has more than 30 years of experience studying native plants and animals, ecological relationships, endangered species, managing nature preserves, restoring habitats, public policy, impact analysis, and designing and implementing mitigation strategies.
